Around the Bays

Kirsty White’s evocative handmade prints of the New Zealand coastline offer a joyful and gentle reflection on the history of our beautiful country.

Featuring scenes from the South Coast to Titahi Bay, the work in this show captures some of our favourite places, all depicted with Kirsty’s characteristically intimate perspective and attention to detail.

Kirsty White is a Lyall Bay artist working in printmaking. Frequently working in the Inverlochy Art School Print Studio, Kirsty's practice is another strand in the the rich tapestry of beautiful, innovative artwork created on the Inverlochy printing press.

Kirsty discovered printmaking through her degree in spatial design at Massey University. The printing press and the many processes and techniques involved in print making opened up a world where art, design and craft collided; 'giving me the freedom to express myself through drawing, mark making, pattern design and more'.

Drawing inspiration from Māori whakairo, Fijian masi cloth and Samoan tapa, Kirsty's landscapes are merged with patterning to reflect the history of a site. Her artwork often sparks a nostalgic reaction to a favourite view, and indeed, Kirsty's work aims to convey an historic narrative within her modern aesthetic; and assert our beloved landscapes as 'something more than hills and water... a chance for me to portray New Zealand's rich cultural mix, our history and our passion for our land'.
